Kaepernick's Crusade: From the Gridiron to the Classroom

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has emerged as a powerful voice for social justice, using his platform to advocate for change and inspire the next generation. His latest venture, a children's book co-authored with his wife Nessa Diab, aims to empower young minds and instill the values of freedom, self-belief, and community.

Empowering the Next Generation to Soar

Laying the Foundation for a Better Future

Kaepernick's passion for empowering youth predates his role as a parent, stemming from his work with the Know Your Rights Camp. Now, as a father, he and Nessa have channeled this drive into their latest project, a children's book titled "We Are Free, You and Me." The book's vibrant illustrations and lyrical prose tackle weighty concepts like self-identity, the right to be free, and the power of community – all with the goal of instilling these values in young minds from an early age."A lot of the passion actually came from the work that we were doing with the Know Your Rights Camp," Kaepernick explains. "Now, being a father– this children's book, We Are Free You and Me, with my wife, Nessa– and all of that culmination has really led to a beautiful book that we hope young kids can take, internalize use it as a foundation as they move forward."Nessa Diab echoes this sentiment, describing the book as a source of "joy, happiness, strength, and empowerment" that celebrates the power of community. "There is just nothing you can't accomplish with the right support system," she says. "And I feel that community is that for most people."

Tackling Weighty Concepts with Simplicity and Nuance

The book's content delves into complex themes, such as the right to be free, the power of one's truth, and the vision of a better future. Kaepernick and Diab recognize the challenge of presenting these ideas in a way that resonates with young readers, but they believe that instilling these principles early on can have a profound impact."How we approached it was, how do we take a lot of the principles of Know Your Rights that is focused on the older age group, the work that we've been doing in communities, and how do we put that in a position where our target audience of 3- to 8-year-olds can read this?" Kaepernick explains. "Like, 'Oh, I start, I'm starting to grasp these concepts of how I can operate in the world and what rights I have, what I can do, what I should be aspiring for.'"Diab adds that the book's empowering messages are something she wishes she had access to in her own youth. "Having empowering messages distilled in a very beautiful, simple way, I think is something that I hope our daughter keeps with her forever."

Reclaiming the Freedom to Be a Child

One particularly poignant passage in the book addresses the freedom to move and play, a concept that Kaepernick and Diab believe is crucial for young, especially Black, children. "Giving kids the space to just be kids like they are not going to be perfect. They're going to play, they're going to explore," Kaepernick says. This sentiment reflects the reality that many children of color are often "adultified" – perceived as older and treated accordingly, rather than being allowed to embrace the joys of childhood. By including this message, Kaepernick and Diab aim to reclaim that fundamental right and empower young readers to embrace their freedom to be themselves.

Keeping the Dream Alive: Kaepernick's Unwavering Commitment

Despite the success of his activism and his new role as a children's book author, Kaepernick's passion for the game of football remains undiminished. Though he has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season, he continues to train and maintain his readiness, determined to return to the field if given the opportunity."I will forever miss it. And I continue to train for it. At the end of the day, I don't want to be in a position where I look back and have to question whether or not I gave it my all to try to pursue that," Kaepernick says. "I will make sure that the reason I'm not playing is not because of my work ethic or commitment, but because I was held out of it."Kaepernick's unwavering dedication to both his athletic pursuits and his social justice work serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact, both on and off the field.
